The Center for Grief Care and Education is proof that our commitment and service to the community does not end with the death of a hospice patient.  We support people in their grief process with clinical services and educational tools, including workshops, support groups, individual and family counseling and special children’s programs.  We also educate and train professional counselors and health care professionals in all aspects of grief and loss.  And our services are open to all in the county.

Providing opportunities for healing and supporting our community.

WHAT WE DO FOR YOU

As part of San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine, we are a resource for those who are grieving.  We know that the right kind of support helps. We support people with a range of individualized services that adds up to the most extensive bereavement support network in San Diego County.

Our program of bereavement support services includes private consultation, ongoing therapy for reducing emotional pain and developing coping skills, professionally- led support groups where people in similar circumstances can learn from each other, reinforcing the healing process.  Counseling is available for adults, children, couples, and families.  And it is not limited to families of patients at San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine.  We are here to help the entire community.

WHAT WE DO FOR THE COMMUNITY

San Diego has been our home for more than 30 years.  As the leader in the relief of pain and suffering, we are committed to offering our knowledge, our support, and our expertise to serve the needs of this community.

That includes a program of ongoing support groups and workshops open to anyone impacted by a death: Neighborhood groups that meet weekly in locations throughout San Diego County, support groups for families with grieving children, workshops for coping with the holidays and memorial services honoring the lives of children who have died --- a wide variety of support and information.

In addition we partner with San Diego City Schools and work in a variety of other school districts offering individual and group counseling, to ensure that children who are coping with any type of loss, have a place where they feel safe and comfortable to share their feelings and get their questions answered.  We also help school personnel understand grief and loss.

Counseling, education, research.
All part of our commitment to the community.

Internship opportunities At
the Center for Grief Care and Education

At The Center for Grief Care and Education at The Institute for Palliative Medicine, we provide assessments, outreach support to families and counseling groups. Counseling and outreach services are provided in our offices in Hillcrest, Mission Valley, and also in the clients' homes.  Our one-year intern program provides over 60 hours of initial training, 3 hours of weekly clinical supervision from licensed (AAMFT Approved) therapist(s), continuing education, and a variety of other opportunities.  Department inservices (including expressive arts training and play therapy) supplement frequent trainings offered by members of our interdisciplinary team.

The counseling intern positions are volunteer.  We do provide reimbursement for mileage to home sessions.  We ask for a 12 month commitment from our counselors, and counselors must commit to 20-25 hours per week.   There is a mandatory training prior to the start of the internship.  We expect our counselors to actively participate in individual and group supervision every week.   We have the ability to provide live supervision (either direct, or utilizing a one-way mirror), as well as video taping and audio taping.

The mandatory trainings are offered in April and July.  The Internships begin immediately after the training (May and August).
