Camp Erin is an initiative created and funded by The Moyer Foundation in Seattle, WA - a non-profit organization established by Major League All-Star pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen. Camp Erin is a bereavement camp designed for children ages 6-17 who have experienced the loss of a family member or friend. It is a traditional, fun, high-energy camp combined with grief education and emotional support. Camp Erin is named in memory or Erin Metcalf, a friend of the Moyers who lost her battle to cancer at age 17. Erin's wish was to help other children. Through The Moyer Foundation, Camp Erin has been established across the country, making it the largest network of bereavement camps in the country. Each Camp Erin is facilitated through a partnership with a local hospice or grief support agency. Together, these organizations and the The Moyer Foundation raise funds to help establish new camps, bringing the healing experience of Camp Erin to children in more communities each year.

Grief is a normal, natural reaction to the loss of a loved one, although at times it may feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster. This can be a very challenging time, mixed with different emotions and feelings that can be very confusing. People often express fears of going “crazy.” Although the emotional, physical and mental symptoms of grief might make a person feel like they’re falling apart, these symptoms are not a sign of mental illness and you are not alone.

Our society tends to value productivity and quick results. We are not accustomed to prolonged periods of sadness and there is often the perception that survivors are expected to “get on with life” after only a few weeks. The most productive way to “get on with life” is by respecting the need and time to grieve.

We support survivors by offering various healthy environments in which to grieve. Talking, or other expression about issues you are experiencing may be helpful. The Center for Grief Care and Education (CGCE) at San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care offers individual, couples and family therapy and various support groups. We want to support you and we’ve created a safe environment where all emotions are acceptable and you feel comfortable while you are in the process of working through your grief.

Sudden Death

A sudden death can cause great pain and hardship to those left behind. Bereaved Clients Benefit from Support Groups

We offer open or drop-in bereavement support groups throughout San Diego County during day and evening hours. We have regional groups, walking groups, and expressive art groups designed to meet varying needs.

The Family Bereavement Program was developed for families with children pre-school age through young adults. This is an excellent opportunity for grieving families to come to a support group together and receive specialized counseling that is age-relevant.

To find out more about our services you are invited to attend our Understanding Grief: A Workshop for the Newly Bereaved, which are held the second Tuesday of every month for adults who have been impacted by a recent loss.
