Suffering the loss of a loved one is hard for any of us, but it is even harder for children. Play or sponsor the San Diego Hospice Invitational Golf Tournament on September 9, 2008. The tournament will benefit Camp Erin-San Diego, designed to help children cope with the pain of losing a loved one. Local supporters of Camp Erin include Qualcomm and the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation, along with camp advocates San Diego Padres pitcher Trevor Hoffman and his wife Tracy.
Held at the beautiful and prestigious Crosby Golf Course in the Crosby Estates at Rancho Santa Fe, the fundraiser will begin with an outdoor barbeque and a day of shotgun, scramble-style golf. Immediately following the tournament, the evening will continue with hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, a silent and live auction, and a sit-down family-style dinner.
Tickets for the game will cost $1,400 per foursome, or $350 per player, and includes both lunch and dinner. Tickets for the dinner only are $125. For more information please call (619) 278-6100, or visit www.sdhospice.org/golf.
Funds from the event are dedicated to supporting Camp Erin-San Diego. In 2000, Major League All-Star pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen, created Camp Erin, named in honor of their young friend, Erin Metcalf, who lost her life to cancer. Through the Moyer Foundation, a nation-wide network of Camp Erin bereavement camps has flourished. Each is facilitated through a local hospice or grief support agency. San Diego Hospice and Institute for Palliative Medicine will operate our local camp as one of their many programs offering grief support to people of all ages.
Camp Erin-San Diego is a weekend overnight camp to give grieving children a chance to heal and share what they’re going through with other youngsters. Free to children ages 6-17, it is a traditional, fun environment, with recreational activities combined with age-appropriate counseling, grief education and emotional support. The camp will kick off September 5-7, 2008 at Green Oaks Ranch in Vista. For more information on Camp Erin or other grief support services available through The Center for Grief Care and Education at San Diego Hospice, please call (619) 278-6480 or send e-mail to griefinfo@sdhospice.org.
