"Meditations at the Edge" Workshop presented by San Diego Hospice

Meditations at the Edge Workshop presented by San Diego HospiceSan Diego, CaliforniaSan Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine is pleased to announce a special meditation workshop on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The workshop, titled “Meditations at the Edge” will explore meditation to cultivate mindfulness, compassion and presence in all our relationships. "Meditations at the Edge" workshop is part of San Diego Hospice's Humanities in Hospice series created by Dr. Charles R. Lewis, Faculty Emeritus at San Diego Hospice, and inaugural Chairman for San Diego Hospice’s Sacred Art of Living and Dying committee.

“This experiential event is especially useful for hospice and palliative care professionals and caregivers.  It is designed to enhance self-awareness for all,” said Dr. Lewis.

Norman Fischer is the featured presenter at the workshop. He is a Zen teacher, poet, author, and founding faculty at the Metta Foundation, which trains health professionals to serve as mentors for the dying, Fischer is also co-abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center, where he still teaches, and is the founder of the Everyday Zen Foundation. His latest prose book is “Sailing Home: Using the Wisdom of Homer's Odyssey to Navigate Life's Perils and Pitfalls” and his recent volume of poetry is titled “Questions/Places/Voices/Seasons."

Elizabeth Hamilton will co-present at the workshop. A teacher at the Zen Center of San Diego since 1992, when she and Rosa Parks co-founded the West Coast Rosa Parks Institute, Hamilton, along with her practice partner/husband Ezra Bayda, have led Zen retreats in the United States, Nova Scotia and Australia. She also serves as a San Diego Hospice volunteer, offering meditation groups at their facility. Her book “Untrain Your Parrot – and Other No-nonsense Instruction on the Path of Zen” was selected “Best Zen Book of 2007” (Spirituality and Health).

The "Meditations at the Edge" workshop will be held at San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine’s W.M. Keck Conference Center located at 4311 Third Ave, San Diego, CA 92103.
