Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you to the thousands of volunteers who were part of the fabric of San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine for the past 37 years.

Our volunteers were a vital part of San Diego Hospice and filled a variety of roles - including working directly with patients,  answering phones, assisting with clerical duties, speaking in the community, taking photos, delivering medical supplies to patients, helping with data entry, and performing a multitude of other tasks to support the agency. Each volunteer is unique but all our volunteers have one thing in common – a heart for volunteer service. Thank you for sharing a piece of your heart with us!

Due to the anticipated closure of San Diego Hospice, all patient and family care services are no longer available. General information about hospice care is available below.

Hospice Care

Hospice care is focused on prevention and relief of suffering, relief of pain and other distressing symptoms, and on easing the stress and burdens that accompany illness. The philosophy of hospice care is to promote an optimum quality of life for our patients, their families and caregivers.
 

How Hospice Can Help:

• By managing your physical symptoms and keeping you comfortable
   
• By providing emotional and/or spiritual support for you and your family
   
• By helping you with your daily living activities
   
• By providing information about your care and changes that may occur as your disease progresses
   
• By providing bereavement support to you and your family
   

Who Pays for Hospice Care

Most health insurance plans, including Medicare Part A, Medicare HMO, Medi-Cal, TriCare (Champus), senior health plans and private insurances, offer some level of hospice care benefit.
